Romancing the Booksby Caroline Zonunpari
I have always been a great lover of books. My romance with books started when I was five. My father gifted me with a massive Fairytale book that I still have with me. From that I hopped on to Enid Blyton and Nancy Drew books. I lived in a world of my own, where I could be anyone and do anything I wanted.
When you read a book you find yourself transported into the story, it's as if you have this time machine that teleports you right into the story. I never felt lonely when I was reading a book. After the Nancy Drew phase I started reading anything I could get my hands on it could be magazines like National Geographic, Femina, Time or novels like Mills and Boons, Robert Ludlum etc you name it I would read it. Thanks to my love for reading I could confidently take part in any elocution contest that was held in my school. My English marks were always one of the highest. I could confidently converse with elders on any given topic without sounding like a fool. My confidence grew with all my experiences. I understood the meaning of words that my other classmates did not, thanks especially to my father who never fed me any answers for my questions concerning the meaning of a particular word, his standard reply would be, "Go look it up in the Dictionary, you'll find the answer there."
Nowadays, children barely touch books unless it concerns their studies. Reading as a pleasure is fighting a losing ground with this generation. We should try and instill a love for reading in our children. Books will not be around if there is no one to read them. Who knows 100 years from now books will be treated like some of the priceless artifact that was, but is no more. See Also Article on: Buy Buying Books by the Vivacious Barbara Cartland in India |
